OUR WORK

Ecotourism

At Fondation Bombo Lumene we believe a well developed ecotourism program is a crucial step towards creating ecological, social, and financial sustainability. We are working with the reserve to completely overhaul, renovate, and expand its accomodation in order to attract and accommodate more visitors. This will drastically increase Bombo Lumene’s income from tourism which will go directly back into the reserve’s conservation efforts. We will also be working together to improve the overall visitor experience by developing various outdoor activities such as hiking trails, fishing, volleyball, etc.

Infrastructure

In April of 2021 we were able to instal new water pumps and solar panels that now bring water up to the main camp and village. This means that the men, women, and children of Bombo Lumene will no longer have to make the arduous trek down to the spring and back up to access clean drinking water.  We also plan to assist the reserve’s staff, both financially and technically, in their efforts to improve the rest of Bombo Lumene’s infrastructure. Infrastructure projects would include bringing electricity to the headquarters and staff village, creating signage to delineate the reserve’s borders, to maintain and create new roads and walking routes, build important administrative buildings, renovate old and build new housing for staff and rangers, build ranger posts, and fence of important areas where necessary. We will also help the reserve obtain important tools and equipment necessary to tackle these projects such as tractors, trailers, diggers etc.

Research and Monitoring

We continue to monitor the reserve’s wildlife and inventory its species through the use of 20 camera traps, with the help of Bombo Lumene’s staff. This allows us to understand the ecosystem better and identify key areas of biological importance on which to focus conservation efforts. They also, to an extent, allow us to monitor poaching in the area.

Community Development and Education

We believe community development and education are key components of  conservation. To date we have completely renovated the local school and fully equipped it with all the necessary scholastic material. In the near future, we hope to create an environmental education and awareness program which will be taught in the communities surrounding the reserve.

Anti-poaching Support

Fondation Bombo Lumene will support anti-poaching and anti-deforestation efforts through a variety of different projects including, but not limited to, the construction of ranger posts, outfitting rangers, providing patrol vehicles, fencing key areas, creating a communication system between rangers and headquarters, and more.
