Bombo Lumene School Renovation and Supply of Scholastic Materials

The foundation’s first project was the rehabilitation of the Bombo Lumene primary school and was completed in February 2021. The three-classroom school had been destroyed in a large storm in 2017, and subsequently lay derelict for years. Many students had left the area as a result, while the little remaining students were left to attend classes under makeshift shelters. Access to learning materials was extremely limited, with the entire school sharing a single textbook which they rented from a nearby town. In partnership with the management of Bombo Lumene, and with the help from local builders and carpenters, the school was completely renovated and is now better than ever before. Additionally, with the help of our partner Complast, we equipped the school with all the learning materials needed ranging from books, paper, and writing materials, to globes, calculators, and recorders. Flour Mill

Thanks to our generous partner Unicompex, we were able to get a great deal on a brand-new cassava/maize mill. This will allow the local village to upscale its flour production, remove the cost of transporting their raw ingredients to and from the nearest town 30km away, and generate a greater income for each family.

Infrastructure

Access to Clean Drinking Water

Fondation Bombo Lumene recently installed a powerful water pump which brings water up to the village and main camp from a fresh spring in the valley. The pump is run entirely on solar energy and provides clean water year-round. This means that the Bombo Lumene staff, rangers, and their families no longer have to make the arduous trek down to the valley and back, multiple times per day while carrying heavy loads.

Construction of New Office Spaces

In February 2021 a new office building with three office spaces was completed. The small building sits opposite the school and will be used by its staff. The central office space of the building is a conference room in which meetings will take place. We are also helping to renovate the reserve’s main office building which will soon become the base from which all daily operations are conducted.

Construction of Safari-style Tented Camp

Fondation Bombo Lumene is working with Bombo Lumene’s management to build an entirely new safari-style tented camp at Bombo Lumene. Work commenced in January with the creation of five large wooden platforms covered by thatched roofs on which the first five tents will be placed. The platforms not only serve to protect the tents from potential damage from the elements, but they also allow the tents to be placed in beautiful sloping areas with incredible views. An additional five large domed tents will be placed in the central camping area beneath traditional thatched roofs. The tents will be fully equipped and include small solar panels to power lights and to offer guests the opportunity to charge their electronic devices. The camp will be able to host up to a total of 30 visitors at a time, with revenue from the camp going directly toward the Bombo Lumene Reserve’s operations. This will allow the reserve to tackle a variety of pressing issues as well as increase its patrols and anti-poaching capacities.

Research and Monitoring

Camera-trapping

Since 2019 we have been working together with the staff of Bombo Lumene to conduct camera-trap based research in the reserve. Our goal is primarily to compile an inventory of the mammal species that inhabit Bombo Lumene, and gather as much data on its biodiversity as possible in order to implement the best conservation strategies. To date we have recorded over 32 mammal species ranging from pangolins to forest buffaloes, with more species being discovered regularly. Our camera-trapping efforts have also allowed us to monitor mammal populations and habitat preferences, as well as detect poaching hotspots. This valuable information can then be used to determine key areas on which to focus conservation efforts. Additionally, camera-trapping and time spent in the field has allowed us to record various other species including many new birds that had not been previously recorded in the area (bringing the total count to 245 as of April 2021). In late 2020, we also managed to record one of the first (and very few) videos of the rare and endemic white-headed robin-chat (Cossypha heinrichi).
