flora

The vegetation in Bombo Lumene is characterised by open and wooded savanna as well as thick riparian gallery forests and small forest patches. Its wooded savannas are dominated by species such as Hymenocardia acida, Crossopteryx febrifuga, Annona senegalensis, Vitex madiensis, while open savannas are dominated primarily by Loudetia demeusii, Ctenium newtonii, and Laudelphia lanceolata. In the flooded savannas, marshes, and wetlands, one can find a wide variety of orchids, with the most common being the hooded harlequin orchid (Eulophia cucullata). Other interesting plants found in these areas are carnivorous sundews (Drosera) that ‘feed’ on small insects to make up for the poor soil quality in which they grow. The gallery forests are found primarily in the steep valleys formed by the Bombo and Lumene rivers. They contain a great diversity of tropical plant species akin to those found deep in the Congo Basin rainforest.  These forests are also the only places where remnant old growth trees can still be found.
